This morning we caught the S-tog train for a 40
minute ride from Copenhagen's city center to the town of Hillerød to visit the
Frederiksborg Castle. It was an easy ride from Copenhagen and a quick bus ride in Hillerød train station to the castle.
The palace was built as a royal residence for King
Christian IV and is now a museum of national history. You can spend a lot of time here and a minimum of 2.5 hours. The current edifice
replaced a previous castle erected by Frederick II and is the largest
Renaissance palace in Scandinavia. The palace is located on three small islands
in the middle of Palace Lake and its gardens are wonderful. It is well worth a
visit when you are in Denmark. The audio guide is pretty good and gives you a
complete overview of Danish history.
