Our home away from home is the Gran Hotel on 6 Septembre in old historical Mexico City. The hotel sets on the Zocalo (which I learned means the pedestal of a statue). It turns out a great statue was to be erected here and was never completed. While the statue never showed up - the name stuck with the locals. Each side of the Zocalo sits the power base of modern civilization based on a european model - Church, Ruler, Military and Commerce.
The hotel was originally a department store and changed to a hotel in 1940s. It boasts an amazing Belgium stain glass ceiling on the same French metal structure as the Eiffel tower. Before the Mexican Revolution, the French had an incredible influence on the city and its people. The Gran Hotel is filled with old world charm sprinkled with a few modern updates like wifi. You are definitely stepping back in time when you enter the hotel doors.
