The architecture of the Centre Pompidou was very controversial with all of the building's insides (plumbing, electrical, ventilation, escalators) placed on the outside. It was also a very rare competition open worldwide rather than limited to Parisian architects. One interesting note - the original design included plans for completely moveable the floors using hydraulics. Unfortunately - money ran out and this feature was dropped.

Centre Pompidou
Today we were joined my our docent from Context Travel at the Centre Pompidou of modern and contemporary art. I am a long time believer in the value of hiring guides to provide a real in-depth education of museum exhibits. Our docent Lorraine did a terrific job telling about the history of the Centre and its construction as well as lots of insight about the various art movements. It is fun to learn which artists worked together and learned from each other. It is all of the inside stories that forever change your experience at a museum - not to mention - make you a little bit smarter for the next visit.
