One other lesson - few of the statues or monuments that you see today are really representative. It seems that almost all of them were painted. Here is a perfect example from Egypt. This statue retained its paint since it was stored in a tomb. Almost all of the white marble statues would have been covered with bright colors. The same is true for most monuments and buildings.
