Madrid - Day Three : Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Today we tour the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum with our Context docent Andrea. The museum contains the permanent collection from Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Baroness's newer collection. Both are amazing. The Baroness is still alive and oversees much of the collection. Her collection is on loan to the people of Spain - at least for now. The Baroness Carmen was a socialite, model and younger than the Baron. Needless to say her life is one of tabloids.

Unfortunately cameras aren't allowed in the museum. The museum has a terrific online map of their works. It is a joy to visit. A must is the Baroness's favorite work by Paul Gaugin named Mata Mia from 1892.

One tip - located immediately in the grand hall is a small staircase to an intimate special exhibit hall ( read: 30' by 30') which should not be missed. The current show Faces & Hands featured some of the most famous works housed in the museum including Jesus among Doctors by Albrecht Durer.
