Reproduction

I love learning new things. I had no idea that most of the original Greek sculptures were bronzes not marble. (Pictured: Greek goddess Diana was originally in bronze but only the marble reproduction exists today) Nor did I know that all the first roman marble sculptures were actually copies of the Greek works. Roman is seems actually only contributed originals when it came to rulers and busts of real people. Very few of the original Greek sculptures remain today - they were either were lost or reused.

The Venus De Milo and Winged Victory on display in the Louvre are two of the rare original Greek sculptures. Venus is famous because it was the first piece owned by the Louvre who was in serious competition with the British Museum in London (who BTW already had an original Greek sculpture). Needless to say - the Louvre did a terrific job and today Venus is surrounded by crowds.
