Hong Kong - Day Four Tai O Stilt Houses

Tai O is a fishing village with a rich history. In the 1940s over 70 acres of salt flats produced over 1.5 metric tons of salt by drying ocean water and collecting the valuable mineral for trade. The town is also widely known for smuggling and home to some of the countries most famous pirates. Destined to be overthrown and killed by mainland authorities, the local ruler reported he had thrown the citizens into the sea. Little did Chinese authorities realize - he was referring to the famous stilt houses found in the village.
